Red Barn

Weekly Photo Challenge: The Color Red

This week I’ve been updated my online galleries and choosing pictures to offer as limited edition prints for sale. I was looking for eye-poppingly colorful images. There was a surprising amount of red! We all love a bit of red to get us energized. I’ve toned my portfolio down a bit (I don’t want to only be known because I photograph red things – I like blue things, too), but this week, your challenge is to:
Photograph the Color Red
Red Barn
This red barn stood out a mile. The green field and blue sky almost makes this barn look surreal in it’s minimalism. This image is part of my limited edition collection. http://www.jennifermishra.com/prints
You may need to post a few photos. Once you start looking for a pop of red, you won’t be able to stop with just one photo.
Wits End Photography
Since red is such an easy color to find, you may want to try to make this a bit more challenging. Maybe try for a photo that is almost completely red.
Deep red flower macro
Deep Red. A Flower I Couldn’t Resist. This award winning photo is one of my rare macros of a flower. I just couldn’t resist the deep reds. This image didn’t make the cut for my limited collection, but I have a few individual prints available for purchase. https://www.jennifermishra.com/individual-prints

To make this more challenging, play with shades of red – every hue from pink to the deepest maroon.
Truck with character
This truck with character shows off many colors including some variations on red. This image is included in my limited edition collection http://www.jennifermishra.com/prints
Or maybe look for just one pop of the color. A popular thing to do is to photograph a scene featuring a bright red umbrella. This has been done – a lot – but there’s a reason! It’s fun and we all love a bright red umbrella in our photographs. If you haven’t made one of these photographs borrow a red umbrella and give it a go – I seem to have photos with every other color of umbrella, but not a red one. I know what I’ll be photographing this week!
Red in historic piano
An unexpected pop of red can be found in many places including inside a historic piano. This image is included in my limited edition collection http://www.jennifermishra.com/prints
Red is also a popular color to use when making selective color images. Make everything in your photo black and white except the red umbrella. If you don’t know how to do this, search for selective color on YouTube. I’m sure there’s a tutorial or two – or three. I work in Lightroom and all you have to do is go to the HSL panel and turn down the saturation on every color except red. There are ways to fine tune this technique, but this will get you started if you want to play with selective color this week.
Looking down LaSalle
Looking down LaSalle street in Chicago from the Trade Building. Trolly adds a bit of the past to the city. To highlight the reds in the scene, I desaturated all the other colors.
Red is a vibrant color with energy and pizazz. Maybe try to work that into your photo, looking for a subject that is as vibrant as the color. Or be a bit more ironic and look for a pop of red where you’re not really expecting it or where it doesn’t seem to fit.
Love door
Wasn’t really expecting to find such a vibrant color on this door found in a small town in southern Illinois. The door got some love, but the rest of the place was a junk yard – really, it was. This image is part of my limited edition collection http://www.jennifermishra.com/prints
Whether you focus on nature, architecture, or street, I hope I have you seeing red this week!

      1. Thank you Jenn! You wrote me about some other photos in a post I had, but I didn’t have the time to reply. Please don’t consider that I ignored you! I’ll have to find that post. I am really honored by this.
